Exemplifying Stratified Deforestation in Four Protected Areas in Madagascar

چکیده

Protected areas (PAs) are a cornerstone for conservation biodiversity. Madagascar, as hotspot biodiversity, has network of 114 terrestrial protected covering the main forest types occurring on island. Deforestation continues unabated despite 11% Here we present case study approach reporting four PAs from humid forests, dry western and southwestern spiny forests thickets. To describe deforestation in around sites, have considered time window 30 years analysis, focusing six with reliable data: 1990, 2000, 2010, 2015 (the year latest PA update), 2017. We versus other land covers within “buffers” at distance 500 m, 2.5 km, 5 10 km border PA. These buffers were set towards center (inside PAs) outside PAs. The smallest PAs, Kasijy (IUCN IV), Behara Tranomaro (no IUCN category), showed least loss. Tsaratanana I) had highest rates last two concentrated core area. Ranobe PK-32 originally largest extent, lost most its cover annual rate (3.5%) between All cases prove to be very challenging manage. Future activities require tailored interventions account site-specific current potential future threats, detailed this contribution.

Deforestation Spillovers from Costa Rican Protected Areas

Resumen Spillovers can significantly reduce or enhance the effects of land-use policies, yet there exists little rigorous evidence concerning their magnitudes. We examine how national parks within Costa Rica affect the clearing of forest nearby. We find that average deforestation spillover impacts are not significant within 0-5km and 5-10km rings around parks. However, we argue that this averag...

Measuring Protected Areas’ Impact on Deforestation in Panama

Throughout the last century, protected areas (PAs) have been the major policy instrument for forest conservation worldwide, as well as in the Republic of Panama. The country has strived to lower the decline in its tropical forest cover which is rich in biodiversity. The importance of evaluating existing forest policies has been increasing, especially with emergence of financial incentives given...

Governance regime and location influence avoided deforestation success of protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon.

Protected areas in tropical countries are managed under different governance regimes, the relative effectiveness of which in avoiding deforestation has been the subject of recent debates. Participants in these debates answer appeals for more strict protection with the argument that sustainable use areas and indigenous lands can balance deforestation pressures by leveraging local support to crea...

A Global Analysis of Deforestation in Moist Tropical Forest Protected Areas

Protected areas (PAs) have been established to conserve tropical forests, but their effectiveness at reducing deforestation is uncertain. To explore this issue, we combined high resolution data of global forest loss over the period 2000-2012 with data on PAs. For each PA we quantified forest loss within the PA, in buffer zones 1, 5, 10 and 15 km outside the PA boundary as well as a 1 km buffer ...
